Sharpening on a sharpening stone: your personal zen-moment!

Some love yoga, others prefer mindfulness. But there are also other ways to relax! Our tip: start sharpening your kitchen or pocket knives on a sharpening stone.

Sharpening your own knives is becoming more and more popular. Great, because it isn't as hard as you might think. Do it inside or take your stone outside! You can sharpen almost everywhere. Like with yoga it could, however, help if you take the time to learn more about the right technique. In the end, however, it all comes down to practice. Focus and the zen-mode will appear on its own. Also great: afterwards your knife will be amazing to use.

Enjoying the sharpening process

Sharp knives are amazing to use. Especially when you have made it as sharp as it is. Most sharpening stones work best if you use some water during the sharpening process. Some sharpening stones need to be submerged in water or only need a couple of drops of water, and others don't need water at all. As such you should always carefully read the manual that comes with the stone before you start using it!

How long do you need to sharpen?

The coarseness of the stone, the bluntness of the knife and the hardness of the steel determine how long you need to sharpen your knife. On average it takes about 10 to 20 minutes to sharpen your knife. So why not take out your headphones to listen to your favourite music, audio book, podcast or watch that show you were planning to watch!

Did you get the hang of it? If so you can decide to sharpen each knife a little more often on a fine sharpening stone. This will only take a couple of minutes because the knives were still relatively sharp. You make the process even shorter if you occasionally use a honing steel before you start using your knife.

Sharpening your knives on a sharpening stone is relaxing, educative and useful! It doesn't get any better than this. To help you out we will tell you more about how you can decide which stone to start with.
