What is CPM?

CPM is a type of powder steel. Powder steel, like CPM S35VN, is produced by atomizing molten steel into fine powder particles which are pressed together under high pressure and sintered into a solid block. This process leaves you with a finer, more uniform microstructure than traditional forged steel. The result is better sharpness retention, wear resistance and toughness. As such powder steel is popular for use in top-quality knives that retain their sharpness well but are also still relatively easy to sharpen.

How good is CPM S35VN steel?

When it comes down to a steel type 'good' is of course relative term. A steel type is as good as it adheres to the demands of the user. So how does that pan out for CPM S35VN? CPM S35VN offers a good balance between toughness, sharpness retention and corrosion resistance. As such it is often used for top-quality pocket knives. Thanks to the addition of niobium, CPM S35VN is even tougher than CPM S30V steel making it more resistant to chipping. In addition, the refined grain structure ensures that S35VN is easier to sharpen than other top-quality types of steel.

What are the disadvantages of CPM S35VN steel?

With so many steel types out there it can be quite the task to determine which is the best choice for you. That is why it is also important to keep the 'disadvantages' of CPM S35VN in mind. Even though CPM S35VN retains its sharpness well, it can lose its sharpness a little faster than CPM S30V.

Which is better? CPM S35VN compared to...?

Many types of steel are used to produce pocket knives. But which steel type is better? First and foremost, this depends on what you are looking for. However, if you do want to make a comparison: CPM S35VN is, of course, similar to its predecessor CPM S30V. This steel type retains its sharpness well but is not as tough as CPM S35VN.

CPM S35VN fans: which brands use CPM S35VN steel?

You have never been more sure: you are looking for a pocket knife with a blade made from CPM S35VN steel. But which brand uses this type of steel for their pocket knives and appeals to you most? CPM S35VN is a popular steel type and is used by multiple brands such as Spyderco, Rick Hinderer and Spartan Blades.

CPM S35VN maintenance

CPM S35VN, like any type of steel, needs to maintained to make the most of it. For CPM S35VN it is important to properly clean and dry the blade to prevent corrosion.

A sharp edge ensures that your pocket knife will function as it should. CPM S35VN is, despite its hardness, still relatively easy to sharpen thanks to the fine grain structure. As such you can make sure your blade is always sharp and ready to be used!
